duo and Encore are the home for online course materials offered by your lecturers. More details of these services can be found on the tabs below.

Online Teaching Platforms

The University uses Collaborate Ultra, Microsoft Teams and Zoom for synchronous teaching, your academic department will communicate with you:

  • where to find the time and links to join live sessions (including which platform is being used)
  • where to find details of any activities you should complete before the session
  • if sessions are being recorded or not
  • if sessions are being recorded where you can access recordings
  • where to find details of activities to do after the session

You can find help on using most tools in duo by following the Help for Students link on the duo home page. This takes you to a searchable website with guidance and videos.

Encore is Durham University’s lecture capture system. Encore enables our teaching staff to record the audio and any content shown on the digital projector during a lecture as well providing hosting video content from other online sessions. Collaborate Ultra is an online teaching platform used for running live online sessions and is accessed via duo. The following resources are useful to help you get started:

Microsoft Teams is part of the Microsoft 365 family and integrates directly with Office applications allowing you to collaborate:

  • Collaborate - work with your team in real-time enabling you to edit documents and discuss ideas collaboratively
  • Group Chat - send instant messages to your team
  • Online Virtual Meeting - host or join and collaborate with Virtual Meetings
  • Share - your screen, PowerPoint Presentation, running programs, interactive whiteboard and more with other people
  • Video/Audio Calls - make high-quality video & audio calls with an individual or a group of colleagues

Zoom is a video conferencing service for all staff and students.
