Planned Maintenance for multiple services

We will be carrying out planned maintenance work which will affect multiple services between 19:00 15 September 2020 and 22:00 17 September 2020. The affected services will be:

  • Staff wired network
  • Telephony
  • Eduroam wireless network
  • Staff wireless network (DU Wireless)
  • Student wireless network (DU Student)
  • The Cloud wireless network (TheCloud@Durham)
  • Connect and Communicate
  • Internet access
  • Network

We are carrying out this work to:

  • Upgrade hardware
  • Perform routine maintenance

Whilst the work is taking place, users may experience interruptions to service.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and will work to keep any potential disruption to a minimum.

Further details

As previously communicated in Dialogue Signposts, CIS will be replacing the University's perimeter firewall solution during the evenings of the 15, 16 and 17 September. This upgrade is essential to replace the legacy solution and to improve the cyber security of the University. The work will take place between 7pm and 10pm each evening, and there will be some disruption to service during each period.

To minimise disruption services will be migrated in 3 discreet groups and will be limited to internet-based traffic.

Tuesday 15 September - Electronic point of sale systems will have a short outage at 7pm. Student PC's in classrooms, and public spaces, including the library, will lose internet connectivity for a short period. Students using their own computers will not be affected.

Wednesday 16 September - Access to the network via MDS Remote and Access VPN will be restricted during this change window, access to email and Office 365 will not be affected.

Corporate websites will be unavailable for a short period.

Guest internet access will also be unavailable.

Thursday 17 September - Telephony will be unavailable for a short period as will building management systems. Access to systems from staff computers will be limited as will access to WiFi for students own computers and devices.

Individual outages are expected to last no more than 30 minutes; however, different systems will be unavailable at various times during the change windows.

CIS will be contacting individual departments where specific remediation work is required to further minimise any disruption.

The works to upgrade our firewalls commenced last night, we experienced some interruptions to student wireless and apologise for any inconvenience. We expect another period of disruption to DU Student this evening and will work to minimise this.
