Authentication for external services

This section provides information about remote authentication services offered by the University

The Shibboleth Griffin

The University's Shibboleth Identity Service

This service allows users to access a range of content where access is restricted to members of the UK Federation.  On the 1st of August 2008 this method of authentication replaced the centrally-funded classic Athens service previously used by educational institutions. Shibboleth is an open source alternative which has been designed to retain the privacy of individuals. It supports a web-based single sign-on (storing the fact that you have already authenticated in your web browser's session) so that you should only need to provide your CIS username and password the first time you access a restricted service (assuming you keep your web browser open in between).

Remote services which require authentication via Shibboleth can often be identified by login buttons such as this one:

More details about using this service and the data it uses can be found from the links to the left.
