Change Password

Before you change your CIS password, you should think carefully about what you want your new password to be. You will find information about how to choose a strong password on our information security advice pages and it must comply with the University’s password policy.

Whilst you're here - set up yourself up on the self-service password reset system so that if you forget your password you can change it yourself. This means that you don't have to go to the IT Service Desk to change it and you can do it at any time as long as you have access to the internet. Go to www.dur.ac.uk/cis/accounts/reset - you'll need to authenticate and then you can set yourself up.

Please note:

  • You will need to change your password everywhere you use it, including mobile phones, tablets, email clients (e.g. Thunderbird) and other devices that you use to access your email. Devices which automatically authenticate to your University account (such as your mobile phone) will not function until you do this.
  • If you have a number of devices which authenticate automatically you may even find your account is locked out for 15 minutes - so make sure you make the change everywhere it is required as soon as you can.
  • For some email clients and applications there may be a delay of up to an hour before the new password is recognised - if it's not working, give it a few minutes and try again.

To change your password, fill in the box below. It will indicate how strong your new password is and If it is classed as being 'weak' then you should change it to something stronger.

Changing forgotten passwords

To help yourself out should you forget your password, CIS provides the facility to set security questions which you can answer instead of entering your password. To be able to do this, you first need to set your security questions (you will need to enter your current password and then scroll to the bottom of the page to set your questions).

Once your security questions are set, you can go to our password reset tool.

If you have forgotten your password and have not set your security questions, you will need to contact the IT Service Desk to have your password reset.

If you experience issues using this and cannot remember your password, please call the IT Service Desk (0191 334 1515) between 08:00-18:00, Mon-Fri. Unfortunately for security reasons, the Out of Hours Helpline will be unable to help you re-set your password.
