Computing and Information Services

Access to the Linux Service

The Linux Service includes desktop computers in CIS computing rooms, Staff Desktops as well as the Mira time-sharing service.

Linux desktop computers available in computing rooms

Clusters of dual boot desktop computers are available for general use in the computer classroom CM002 in the Computing and Maths building and in the computer classrooms in the Courtyard building. These computers can run both Linux and Windows (Managed Desktop). To start the computer in Linux, follow the instructions that are displayed on the Welcome screen. Once logged in to Linux, the Mate desktop will be displayed.

For opening times of the computer classrooms, please consult Opening hours of computing rooms. These rooms are open to all users but may sometimes be reserved for teaching, especially during term time.

The Mira time-sharing service

You can access the time-sharing service Mira remotely by logging in from PCs running MDS, Managed Desktop or Windows, or from Linux/Unix computers. The Access to Mira page provides further details. You can also run cron jobs on Mira, as explained on the Using cron jobs page.
