Combined Honours in Social Sciences

Human Sciences pathway

Please note, that applicants to the Human Sciences pathway apply to the Combined Honours in Social Sciences programme in the first instance, and then transfer onto the Human Sciences pathway once at Durham.

Combined Honours in Social Sciences (Human Sciences)

If you follow the Human Sciences pathway you will study at least two human science subjects, combining modules in Anthropology with modules in Archaeology, Geography and/or Sociology. You can also study a different subject from the Social Sciences or the Arts and Humanities, such as a language.

Year 1

In your first year you will study 2 Anthropology modules (People and Cultures and Human Evolution and Diversity) plus 4 modules from Anthropology / Archaeology / Geography / Sociology. One of the 4 modules can be taken from another subject in the Social Sciences or Arts and Humanities. You can choose to study 2, 3 or 4 subjects, at least 2 of which will be Anthropology plus Archaeology / Geography / Sociology.

Year 2

In your second year you will study 2 Anthropology modules (Methods and Analysis and either Biology, Culture and Society or Evolution, Variation and Adaptation) plus 4 modules from Anthropology / Archaeology / Geography / Sociology. One of the 4 modules can be taken from another subject in the Social Sciences or Arts and Humanities. You can choose to study 2, 3 or 4 subjects, at least 2 of which will be Anthropology plus Archaeology / Geography / Sociology.

Year 3 (Year 4 if undertaking a Year Abroad)

In your final year you will study a double Anthropology module (Anthropology Dissertation) plus 1 other module (or the equivalent of 20 credits) in Anthropology plus 3 modules from Anthropology / Archaeology / Geography / Sociology. One of the 3 modules can be taken from another subject in the Social Sciences or Arts and Humanities. You can choose to study 2 or 3 subjects, at least 2 of which will be Anthropology plus Archaeology / Geography / Sociology.
