External Catering

Following suspension of some in-house catering services, the university has developed a framework of external buffet suppliers for use within University central rooms or for your Department (however not for centrally bookable teaching space or colleges). This framework includes C & P Northern Company Limited (known as The Cheese & Pickle), The Picnic Basket, and Olivia’s Kitchen who have signed up to the university’s supplier terms & conditions and food allergen policy (including non-supply of unpackaged peanuts and tree nuts.) They have also supplied essential documentation including; local authority food business registration, HACCP food safety management system, food safety training details, and liability insurance documents. This framework has been put in place until 02 July 2023.

C & P Northern Company Limited, who is known as The Cheese & Pickle, is one of three external catering supliers you can order buffets to Central Rooms or to your Department. These external suppliers are approved for use whilst Durham University's Delivered Catering is temporarily suspended. For further information, please read through the FAQ's below.

Will my order be packaged and labelled?

All goods will be packed and delivered in line with current and incoming legislation. All of our goods will bear allergy food labels in accordance with Food labelling rules in European Directives 2003/89/EC and 2006/142/EC updated on 13 December 2014 and Natasha Law which come into effect on 1st October 2021?

Do you offer catering for individuals with vegan and gluten free dietary requirements?

All vegan and gluten free options can be found on our menu online or can be ordered bespoke.

What is your cut off time for next day deliveries?

For next day delivery, please order before 11am the day before your buffet is required.

What is the minimum/maximum number of people you can cater a buffet for?

We require a minimum order for 10 people for a buffet order, but we have no maximum number - we can cater to as many people as you need.

How do I order my buffet?

Orders can be made by emailing Office@thecheeseandpickle.co.uk.

Do you accept payment by Credit Card?

We do not accept card payments on BACS.

Do the menu prices offered include VAT?

Yes - our menu prices do include VAT.

How does the catering company find my room?

Event organisers need to provide a detailed map of where the catering is to be to delivered to.

What do I do with any waste food and packaging?

It is the responsibility of the event organiser to recycle any buffet waste.

Vegan and Gluten free guests can be catered for. We have a wide range of options from our suppliers so can offer the same menu as the rest of the guests.

What is your cut off time for next day deliveries?

For next day delivery, please order before 3pm the day before your buffet is required.

What is the minimum/maximum number of people you can cater a buffet for?

We require a minimum order for 4 people for a buffet order.

For cold buffets, we can cater to as many orders as you need. We have support from another caterer to supply large scale hot buffets, however maximum orders for hot buffets will very much depend upon the menu and resource available.

Do you accept payment by Credit Card?

Yes we do, our invoices are sent over by email on the day of delivery and there is a "pay now" link within the email where a credit card can be processed online.

We offer a variation of vegan and gluten free salads, jacket potato options and gluten free wraps on our menu to support individual dietary requirements.

What is the minimum / maximum number of people you can cater a buffet for?

We require a minimum order value of £20 per order.

The maximum number of orders we can supply is 100 people per event.
