Careers Fairs

+What type of career fairs are held at Durham University?

 

Durham holds three graduate fairs:

Careers & Internship Fair

  • 2-day event
  • organisations attend on one day only - nominating their preferred attendance date
  • the event is a ‘general sector’ fair
  • 35 exhibitors on each day
  • student footfall averages 1800 on each day

STEM Careers & Internship Fair

  • 2-day event
  • organisations attend on one day only - nominating their preferred attendance date
  • recruiters with summer internships or placements to fill as well as graduate positions
  • 20 exhibitors on each day
  • event is aimed at all science faculty students and researchers
  • student footfall averages 600 on each day

Law Fair

  • 2-day event
  • organisations attend on one day only - nominating their preferred attendance date
  • for regional, local, national and international law firms
  • 35 exhibitors on each day
  • event is aimed at law students, final year non law students and all students who are interested in a career in law
  • student footfall averages 500 on each day

 

+How do I book a stand at the fair?

 

Visit the appropriate weblink and complete and submit the booking form.

 

+When is the Careers & Internship Fair held and when do bookings open?

 

The fair is held in October during Michaelmas Term and is usually scheduled for the 2nd week after term starts. Bookings open at the end of January/early February for attendance the following November.

+When is the STEM Careers & Internship Fair held and when do bookings open?

 

The fair is held in mid November, during Michaelmas Term. Bookings open at the end of January/early February for attendance the following November.

+When is the Law Fair held and when do bookings open?

 

The fair is usually held towards the end of November. Bookings open on a stipulated date/time -which is advertised on the website.

Advance bookings to exhibit at the fair are not accepted prior to the submission date and booking forms received will be returned and you will be requested to re-submit on the required date/time. 

Please note:

The Law Fair is extremely popular and becomes full quickly – e.g. in previous years the event was booked within half an hour of opening the booking slot. As you can appreciate we cannot predict when the Fair will be fully subscribed, so early submission of your booking form is advisable.

+I provide further study for law students. Can I enrol at the Law Fair?

 

Booking priority for the fair is given to law firms offering direct recruitment of students and graduates.

Your details will be placed on the Wait List until 1st June. If space is remaining, your booking will be considered on a first come first served basis.

+I have a confirmed booking to hold a presentation on the evening of the career fair at Durham University. How do I secure a place at the fair on the same day?

 

Please notify Sue Wilson, the Fairs Coordinator, who will make a note of your attendance requirement. 

The Fairs Coordinator and Events Coordinator work within the Employer Services Team and every effort will be made to ensure your requirements are met.

+I am restricted in the day I can attend the Durham career fair, what do I do?

 

If you have booked to attend a career fair at another University over the same period as a Durham career fair, please notify Sue Wilson, the Fairs Coordinator, who will make a note of your attendance requirement and will try to accommodate you.

+I submitted a booking form to attend a career fair and received an acknowledgement. Does that mean I have a place at the fair?

 

No, the acknowledgement received is automatically generated. You will receive a confirmation email from the Fairs Coordinator when the booking has been accepted.

+I work for a recruitment company, can I attend the Careers & Internship Fair or STEM Careers & Internship Fair?

 

Booking priority for the career fairs is given to organisations offering direct recruitment of students and graduates.

If you are registering on behalf of an organisation which offers recruitment services, further study courses or travel abroad your booking will be considered on a first come first served basis after 1st June.

+My company offers opportunities to travel abroad. Can we attend the Careers & Internship Fair or STEM Careers & Internship Fair?

 

Booking priority for the career fairs is given to organisations offering direct recruitment of students and graduates.

If you are registering on behalf of an organisation which offers recruitment services, further study courses or travel abroad your booking will be considered on a first come first served basis after 1st June.

+We offer further study opportunities. Are we able to attend the Careers & Internship Fair or STEM Careers & Internship Fair?

 

Booking priority for the career fairs is given to organisations offering direct recruitment of students and graduates.

If you are registering on behalf of an organisation which offers recruitment services, further study courses or travel abroad your booking will be considered on a first come first served basis after 1st June.

+What is the cost and what is included?

+I understand the career fair is fully booked. How do I register for the Wait List?

 

Register for the Wait List by completing and submitting the online booking form for the fair you are interested in.

+Why do I have to complete the booking form when the career fair is full?

 

The details on the booking form help us to:

  • Update information on the mailing list so you will receive details on forthcoming career fairs i.e. when bookings open.
  • If a cancellation is received, we have your details to hand and can contact you to ascertain if your organisation is still interested in attending the fair.
  • The opportunities you have available will be highlighted to members of the Careers Centre team, who will subsequently make students aware of the options.
  • Your details are passed to other members of the Employer Services Team who could contact you to see if there is any other way you could work with the Career Centre to raise your profile with Durham students.

 

+Which student year groups attend the career fairs?

 

All year groups receive notification on the specific fair and are encouraged to attend.

+I want to increase/decrease the number of representatives attending the career fair?

 

Increase attendees - please inform the Fair Coordinator by email, who will arrange for the appropriate number of lunch vouchers to be placed in the Welcome Pack.

We have a limited number of lunch vouchers available on the day. Please notify a member of the Careers Team when you have registered your attendance, you will be asked to sign for the additional request(s) and these will be invoiced after the fair.

Decrease attendee number – providing sufficient time has been given you can decrease no of representatives attending without charge. 

However if the request has been received too late and the lunch numbers confirmed with the catering team, the charge for lunch/refreshments will be stand.

+Do you cater for special dietary requests?

 

Please advise us if any of your representatives have a dietary request. Our catering team will endeavour to meet their request.

+I understand that there is an additional charge if more than 2 representatives attend the fair. What does the charge include?

 

The additional charge, which is shown on the booking form, is to cover the cost of lunch (depending on the catering arrangements this could be a hot meal or cold buffet) and refreshments (tea/coffee/water) – which are available for the duration of the career fair.

+I have to cancel my attendance. How do I do this?

 

Please view our Terms and Conditions for booking an event organised by the Careers, Employability and Enterprise Centre. You should have should have received a copy with your booking confirmation email or it is displayed on the website for the individual career fair.

+I work for a publishing company. Can I have a stand at the career fair?

 

Due to space restrictions at the venues currently used, booking priority is given to organisations offering direct recruitment of students and graduates.

Reference copies of relevant publications will be available on the days of the fair and students will be directed to the Careers Centre to collect copies.

+I am exhibiting at the career fair. Can I send my marketing material by courier?

 

The Careers Centre cannot accept any marketing/display material before the event. Any material should be sent direct to the venue and must be clearly labelled and ensure your company name is displayed.

Pre-event information will be circulated by email ahead of the relevant career fair.

+Can you advise on parking for the Careers & Internship Fair?

 

A limited number of parking spaces within the University campus have been allotted for exhibitors. A valid Visitors Parking Permit must be displayed in your vehicle and vehicles must park in the designated areas. The Permits will be issued, on a first come first served basis, from the Employer Registration desk at the Fair and restricted to one vehicle per company. Permits can be reserved in advance.

Please note: parking within the Howlands Park & Ride designated area is free to those purchasing a Park and Ride bus ticket. Please refer to Durham County Council website for further details and penalty charges.

+Can you advise on parking for the STEM Careers & Internship Fair?

 

There is strictly a no parking policy in operation on the campus for the duration of the career fair.

  • On-street parking is available closeby in Church Street, New Elvet and Hallgarth (approximately 10 minutes walk from the venue)
  • The Prince Bishop multi-storey car park is approximately 20 minute walk from the venue.
  • The Howlands Park and Ride is approximately 5 minute walk to the venue.

Please note: parking within the Howlands Park & Ride designated area is free to those purchasing a Park and Ride bus ticket. Please refer to Durham County Council website for further details and penalty charges.

+Can you advise on parking for the Law Fair?

+Is power supplied to the individual stands?

 

Yes, power is supplied to all stands.

+Is wifi available?

 

Wifi is available at the event. Please obtain a user name and password from the reception desk at the fair.

+Is there disabled access at the venue?

 

The Careers & Internship Fair and Law Fair are both held in the same venue, which has disabled access.

The STEM Careers & Internship Fair is situated on the first floor and is accessible via a lift.

If any of your representatives require assistance please advise the Fairs Coordinator in advance.

+My organisation is interested is sponsoring the career fair. Is this possible?
