The Poisoned Kiss by Vaughan Williams
Durham Castle's Great Hall is transformed into a mystical and magical forest for five nights this February as Durham Opera Ensemble perform Vaughan Williams' opera 'The Poisoned Kiss'.
This is the tale of a magician who is full of hatred for the woman who stole his heart. He plans his revenge by bringing up his daughter on poison so that her first kiss, which he intends to be with the son of his estranged lover, will be deadly. When his daughter accidently falls in love with Prince Amarylis in the forest, he is rendered unconscious by her kiss, and his life hangs by a thread. The Empress had anticipated such an event, and had brought her son up on antidotes to protect him from death. At each twist and turn in the plot, a trio of Mediums and an opposing trio of Goblins seek to thwart and manipulate the protagonists.
