The 50th Anniversary Conference of the Department of Archaeology

29th June - 1st July 2007

2007 marks two birthdays - the 175th Birthday of the University and the 50th birthday of the Department of Archaeology! The Department plans to mark both anniversaries through the organisation of a 175th / 50th Anniversary Conference on the weekend of Friday 29th to Sunday 1st July. The weekend celebrations will begin with a three course Anniversary Dinner at Grey College on the Friday evening (7 pm), with after dinner speech by Professor Rosemary Cramp. There will also be an Anniversary Party on Saturday evening at Grey College from 8pm featuring the Ceilidh band Northern Lights and a late bar. In between all of the socialising there will be a series of papers presented in the Appleby Lecture Theatre (Geography) by some of Durham's finest, both past and present, beginning Saturday at 9am and continuing on the Sunday until 4.30pm (see programme below). We thought that a series of informative yet entertaining talks would showcase the past and present achievements of the Durham Department, as well as showing the directions of current cutting-edge research. In addition, posters will be displayed throughout the conference by the Department's recent and current postgraduate students.

We hope that you will attend and join us in this celebration of one of the leading Departments of Archaeology in the United Kingdom. This will also be a wonderful opportunity to renew your acquaintance with many of your contemporaries in an informal atmosphere, with lots of time for socialising. We should also be grateful if you could pass on news of our Anniversary Weekend to any other Durham graduates with whom you are in contact. We look forward to hearing from you for what promises to be an outstandingly successful birthday weekend.

For those of you who have booked accommodation, rooms will be available from 2pm on the day of your booking. Registration will take place from 5pm on Friday 29th June at Grey College reception and from 8.45am on Saturday from the entrance to the Appleby Lecture Theatre, Geography. Could any queries about the conference please be directed to Becky Gowland (rebecca.gowland@dur.ac.uk).
