I joined Durham University in July 2015 to coordinate the Wellcome Trust-funded Life of Breath project in the Centre for Medical Humanities.

I have been working in science communication, outreach and education since 1999. Having discovered early on that a well-designed activity could literally make people faint, I went on to develop and manage education and engagement programmes, most recently as a regional manager for the Royal Society of Chemistry (2014-15) and previously at SETPOINT North East, University of Teesside (2002-06) and Life Science Centre (2000-02).

I also spent 8 years working freelance (trading as Sparks Education 2006-2014) alongside lecturing part-time in biochemistry and science in society at Newcastle College. Freelance projects included managing the Young People’s Programme at the British Science Festival 2013 in Newcastle, writing for FAO (UN), Science in School and Biomedical Picture of the Day and evaluating 'Food Physics' for the IoP. My academic background is in plant biochemistry and I have a BSc from Edinburgh University and PhD from Imperial College, Wye Campus.
