University policy is that external examiners should not act as second markers of scripts/assessed work but as moderators; only in exceptional cases and after consultation with the Chair of the Board of Examiners should External Examiners be asked to adjudicate on a disagreement about marks.
All separate assessments should be reviewed by the External Examiner.
Generally an External Examiner should be asked to look at all failing pieces of work and a representative selection of other work (minimally: 10%, or 10, whichever is the greater number) to mirror the Departmental moderation policy.
Coursework submitted on DUO should be viewed by the External Examiner on DUO unless other arrangements have been made; the External Examiner will choose the pieces of work to review so you do not need to provide a list.
Exam scripts for scrutiny (all fails and a representative selection of other work to mirror the Departmental moderation policy) should be put in a separate pile in order of attainment when returning to Departmental office.
