External Examiners

Please note:

University policy is that external examiners should not act as second markers of scripts/assessed work but as moderators; only in exceptional cases and after consultation with the Chair of the Board of Examiners should External Examiners be asked to adjudicate on a disagreement about marks.

All separate assessments should be reviewed by the External Examiner.

Generally an External Examiner should be asked to look at all failing pieces of work and a representative selection of other work (minimally: 10%, or 10, whichever is the greater number) to mirror the Departmental moderation policy.

Coursework submitted on DUO should be viewed by the External Examiner on DUO unless other arrangements have been made; the External Examiner will choose the pieces of work to review so you do not need to provide a list.

Exam scripts for scrutiny (all fails and a representative selection of other work to mirror the Departmental moderation policy) should be put in a separate pile in order of attainment when returning to Departmental office.

External Examining Review Form
Please complete this form in as much detail as possible.

(please list each separate summative assessment, e.g. 2500 word essay, exam, and note where the External can read the description of the assessment given to students on the DUO module site):

(if the work has been assessed by more than one person, please list them, and if more than one assessment has been set, please list that alongside the marker’s name)

(if the work has been moderated by more than one person, please list them, and if more than one assessment has been set and hence moderated, please list it alongside the moderator’s name)
