Welcome to the Durham University Accommodation Office web pages. Our role is to help both current and prospective students to find privately rented accommodation in Durham and Stockton. Staff members and visiting researchers are also welcome to contact us for support.
Most undergraduate students live in college accommodation their first year, and then can chose to live in or find private accommodation in subsequent years. Approximately two-thirds of postgraduate students live in private accommodation.
Durham City and Stockton both have a variety of flats, houses and rooms in owners' homes spread across the city and nearby villages. There is no shortage of accommodation in the area so there is no need to panic about not finding anywhere to live and we would strongly advise you to take your time to find accommodation and not rush in to anything.
Remember that a tenancy agreement is a legally binding document. It is therefore essential to be happy with accommodation locations, flatmates and rent levels before signing a contract which can't be cancelled. Please contact the Students' Union Advice and Help Service before signing any tenancy agreement to ensure that the contract is legal and that it adequately protects your rights.
The University does not make any specific recommendations, but there are a number of accommodation search sites and Letting Agents that can be found via any internet search engine.
