Academic Support Office

Academic Support Office

The Academic Support Office supports the University in its aim of offering high quality educational opportunities that are consistent with Durham's commitment to 'achieve the highest standards in research-led education for both undergraduates and postgraduates, linking research and education in creative ways', based on its commitment to 'value knowledge and learning for their own sake as well as for their cultural, social and economic benefits' (University Strategy 2010-20).

To this end, the Academic Support Office:

  • Supports the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Dean of Postgraduate and Undergraduate Education in the development of strategy and policy for education.
  • Supports the development and implementation of the University's quality management processes.
  • Manages University level appeals, complaints and discipline processes.
  • Manages the faculty and University levels of the student progress procedures for postgraduate students.
  • Supports the University's faculties in academic planning relating to educational provision.

In carrying out these roles the Academic Support Office is committed to ensuring that the ways in which it supports all these areas are, and remain, fit for purpose, through the implementation of a comprehensive evaluation framework.

To support it in meeting these aims, the Academic Support Office annual plan sets out a series of specific objectives for each academic year. The 2012/13 - 2016/17 plan is available at the following link:
