About Durham University

University Council

University Council is the ultimate governing body of the University and its Trustee Board. Its membership comprises seven appointed staff members, a majority of independent appointed lay members (11) and the President of the Durham Students' Union. The Vice-Chancellor is an ex-officio member of Council. Meetings of Council are normally held six times a year. Council is supported by a number of key committees including:

  • Finance Committee (current Chair: Joanna Barker)
  • Audit Committee (current Chair: Alexis Cleveland)
  • Remuneration Committee (current Chair: Kate Pretty)
  • Nominations Committee (current Chair: Robert Gillespie)

The University Executive Committee is a joint Committee of the Council and the Senate, as is the Ethics Advisory Committee (current Chair: Mr Richard Burge) and the Academic Progression Committee (current Chair: Stuart Corbridge).
