Sociology in Action

Since 2019 the department has annually held a Sociology in Action week.  Linked to our research and our taught curriculum, the aim of this week is to take our work out of the classroom and explore Sociology and Criminology from a different perspective.

Past projects have included:

  • A teach out on the theme of 'Fake News' held in the Durham Miners Institute
  • An artist in resident scheme focused on collaboratively creating songs of protest linked to our Research themes
  • A writing residency facilitated by three writers to explore the theme of identity. Find out more about the 2020/21 'The Self in the World' programme.

This year's project is a photography competition to encourage students to explore and interpret the theme of 'social harm' as it relates to Sociology and Criminology, and capture the theme in a photo. Photos will be judged by a panel and the panel will make an award based on: relevance to ‘social harm’; artistic expression; creativity and originality; quality of image; and emotion and impact.
