Junior Common Room

The Junior Common Room makes up the undergraduate student body at Van Mildert. It is not only a place for students to have their voices heard within the university, but it also provides students with a huge amount of the wider student experience activities they participate in throughout their degree: from events to outreach and college sports, the JCR is the heart of the Mildert student community. 

The Collegiate system is what makes Durham University so unique. Each college has its own identity and the huge amount of student participation is what makes Mildert the community that it is. The JCR is entirely student run - we have two sabbatical officers and a 10 person elected "Exec" who oversee everything we do to make your college experience special. With over £250,000 turnover and nearly 200 volunteers every year, Mildert JCR is a very special place. 

We have a huge amount of activity going on every single day. We have 18 sports clubs and over 50 sports teams, allowing our students the opportunity to take part from beginner level to cup-winning teams (of which we have many!). 

Mildert also has a longstanding volunteering heritage. We run six huge outreach projects with over 100 volunteering positions every year. These projects work throughout the local community and the whole of County Durham in local primary schools, secondary schools, the refugee community, the isolated elderly and conversation groups and projects. We are consistently recognised for our student volunteers and unique projects in the Durham University Volunteering Awards and further afield. 

On top of all of this, we run some of the biggest events in the university. From two 800 attendee black tie balls to a charity fashion show with over 70 student models, you are certain to get into the Mildert spirit. We also have a student run Talk and Support team. This is not only an incredible non-advisory peer to peer listening service, but also a source of stressless events during exams and relaxed alternatives to club nights and high energy events, and a provider of welfare resources throughout the year.
