You've looked up an item on the Library catalogue and it's listed as 'not on loan', yet when you try to find it, the book doesn't seem to be on the library shelves. What should you do?
First, check that you are at the correct shelf. Does the shelfmark have a prefix such as XX, + or Pam? If so, then these are shelved elsewhere in the Library - ask staff for details if you are unsure. Similarly, if you're looking for a short loan item, these are housed in separate areas of each of the libraries to the rest of the collections.
If you are at the correct shelf, check that you are at the correct place in the sequence (bear in mind that shelfmarks within the classification system that the library uses, [Dewey Decimal Classification] can often run to many decimal places). Books at the same number are then shelved alphabetically by the 3 letters following the number. Look along the shelf, as well as above, below and even behind; books are often removed then replaced incorrectly.
If you still can't find the title you're looking for, the book may be in a reshelving area or another student may be using it within the library. Please ask library staff for help if you are still unable to locate it.
