Durham's committment to research in Africa recognised at the inaugural HEI Africa Forum

Durham University has a long-standing association with Africa.  This continuing commitment of the University to research and education on the continent was recognised recently through an invitation to Dr Mark Booth to address the inaugural HEI Africa Forum held at Reading University on 10th January 2012.  Speaking as a convenor of the Africa Regional Interest Group, Mark presented information about several research, engagement and education activities being undertaken at the University in a plenary session focussed on how Universities are responding to the 'new Africa'.

Research subjects presented by Mark included climate change, childhood development and mobility, parasitology and Sudanese politics.  In terms of partnerships, Mark highlighted the work being undertaken by the Low Carbon Energy for Development Network, the N8 Parasitology Network and the International Boundaries Unit.  In terms of education and training, Mark spoke about the enduring partnership with the Zambian NGO 'Sport in Action', the Ruth First Educational Trust and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

One outcome of the meeting was the suggestion that the event should be held annually, rotating around Universities.  Durham is probable host for the forum next year.
