Andrew Gallant is a Lecturer in the School of Engineering at Durham University.

He graduated with a first class honours degree in Applied Physics with Electronic Engineering from Durham University in 2000. As an undergraduate, Andrew was sponsored by Fujitsu Microelectronics and worked in their Newton Aycliffe DRAM fab.

He stayed in Durham to develop widely tunable micromachined capacitors and received his PhD in 2004 (EPSRC CASE award with Filtronic Compound Semiconductors). Dr Gallant worked as a Research Associate in the Microsystems Technology Group at Durham until July 2008 when he was appointed as a Lecturer.

Research

Micromachined THz Filter

Dr Gallant is interested in microfabrication techniques and their application to the electromagnetic spectrum.

In recent years, his work has focused on the terahertz region where he has developed a range of micromachined artificial materials. These can act as filters or negatively refracting prisms for beam steering.

He has over forty publications (journal and conference).
