Randomised Controlled Trials in the Social Sciences Eighth Annual Conference

Wednesday 11th - Friday 13th September
This conference aims to:
•Facilitate sharing and collaboration between academic disciplines in this area;
•Discuss the opportunities and challenges of communicating about trials to wider audiences.;

The conference is jointly organised by Professor David Torgerson (University of York, York Trials Unit, Department of Health Sciences), Dr Christine Merrell (Durham University, CEM) and Professor Carole Torgerson (Durham University, School of Education).

The conference workshop is jointly organised by Professor Carole Torgerson and Professor Stephen Gorard (Durham University from 1st May) as part of the ESRC Researcher Development Initiative Wave 5 Project on Training in Quantitative Methods.

Call for Abstracts Refereed oral and poster contributions relevant to RCT's conducted in social sciences are invited. Abstracts should follow a structured format - such as Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusion; be no longer than 250 words, excluding references; and include no more than three references.

Main Conference
Wednesday 11th September & Thursday 12th September 2013. Collingwood College, Durham 
The registration fee includes lunch and refreshments on both days. The conference dinner will be held on Wednesday evening at Collingwood College.

•The Conference will include keynote and invited presentations from national and international speakers and contributed presentations on all aspects of randomised trials in the social sciences.

•Keynote speaker: Professor Larry Hedges (Northwestern University, USA) will present a keynote lecture on 'Some challenges in conducting cluster randomised field trials in education and the social sciences.'

Invited speakers:
Professor Sheila Bird (MRC's Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge) and Professor Clare Bambra (Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing, Durham University).

•There will be an opportunity for delegates to discuss their own trials at a one-hour ‘surgery’.

Advanced workshop 
Friday 13th September - Collingwood College, Durham.
The half day programme includes two one hour advanced level workshops with questions, led by Professor Larry Hedges and will finish with lunch:
•How design aids and eases analysis.
•A typology of effect sizes and their relative merits.

The workshop is sponsored by the ESRC-funded project forming part of the national Researcher Development Initiative and the Quantitative Methods Initiative. The workshop is free to all, but is designed to be most appropriate to experienced social scientists and those involved in teaching quantitative methods for new researchers.

Because this is part of an on-going project, the presenters will ask the audience for formative feedback at the end.
