Iconography and Iconology: Theological thinking of the early church behind the veneration of Icons

public Lecture by the Friends of the Oriental MuseumDr Elena Nariskaya will look at the development of church art and its place in theology. Various concepts about theological appropriation of icon veneration vs idolatry will be discussed.
The talk will address stereotypes and misunderstandings of the tradition of icon veneration from both a theological and a historical perspective, providing a more in depth understanding of the place of icons in spiritual life, as well as the life of the Christian church. Lectures are free to Friends. For visitors the cost is £3 (£1 concession).
