Wilmore Sculpture

'Willmore Surface' - An Interpretation in Sculpture

14th March 2012, 14:15 to 17:00, Calman Learning Centre, Science Site, Durham Univesrity

A new sculpture will be unveiled in front of the Calman Learning Centre to celebrate the work of Durham Mathematician Tom Willmore. His widow, Gillian Boughton of St Mary's College, is to unveil the sculpture with the assistance of international mathematician Professor Franz Pedit.
There will also be a Public Lecture given by Professor Franz Pedit (Amherst and Tuebingen) at 2.15pm in CLC203 entitled "The Willmore Conjecture - the first fifty years".

Tom was Professor of Mathematics at Durham from 1964 to 1985, Dean of Science twice and a man of great charcter who contributed to the national profile of the department.

The project has been in the hands of a local family firm, North East Granite of Langley Moor.
