'I'm here! And I want to give something back!'
Carol has worked for the University for 11 years whilst simultaneously volunteering as a governor for a local school, and with a community youth group- a project she initiated, secured funding for, and directed. Carol’s dedication to volunteering has made a real difference to her community, and as one of the first participants in the Staff Volunteering scheme, she has inspired many more to become active volunteers.

A clever collaboration
There was initially limited contact between the County Durham Community Foundation grants team and the University, but then the SVO Phoenix programme was launched in 2008/2009. One of the issues in volunteering can be a lack of openings for volunteers at a higher professional level, so the new SVO Project Manager approached the Foundation to see how they could help fill this gap.

First aid at the Olympics
Erna, initially attracted to volunteering to meet new people, was surprised when her work with the Red Cross took her to the London 2012 Olympics.Erna has worked for Durham University as a computer developer for ten years. During this time, she has used the Staff Volunteering Scheme to pursue and maintain her position as a Red Cross First Aider. The scheme therefore made it possible for Erna to spend five days at the London Olympics fulfilling this role, the experience being described as ‘once in a lifetime.’

Trip of a lifetime
As a St. Cuthbert’s society Assistant Senior Tutor, Barbara has worked for Durham University for ten years. Barbara has continually supported student and staff volunteering within the university, as well as organisations outside of the university, one being the London 2012 Olympics. During the Olympics, Barbara proudly became a ‘Games Maker,' describing the opportunity as unsurpassable. Barbara explains that the way in which an individual’s life is constructed, is changed by experiences such as this one, made possible through schemes such as Staff Volunteering.

Volunteer for life
Claire has not only worked for Student Community Action for several years, but is also a keen volunteer in her own time. From working in a charity shop, to supporting CATss, Claire has tried her hand at many volunteering opportunities. Engaging in numerous projects, Claire enjoys the opportunity to get out of the office and mix with new young people, but also remarks on the power of volunteering to influence personal life decisions.
