What do I do?
Well, aside from the excellent support and social events you can expect from Van Mildert, Durham University also has the Durham Student’s Union (DSU), an organisation that represents all students at the university. From welfare to social events every weekend, the DSU is another place where your voice can be heard, but at an inter-collegiate level, and where YOU can have an input into university-wide policy.
So this is where I come in. As Senior DSU Rep for Van Mildert College, I represent all of Van Mildert’s views to the DSU, and make sure our concerns are known and dealt with. More than this, I bring DSU campaigns on welfare and student politics back to college, to better represent and protect you! The DSU is our union, it is designed to give us internal support in university (such as finding a house when living out) or protecting us externally from nasty government plans to raise university costs!
I organise Van Mildert’s presence at the DSU, through recruiting a team of passionate junior reps who can join me in debate and voting at DSU council meetings, where WE DECIDE what we want our union to do. I also attend ‘Joint Committee’ meetings, where all the reps from the colleges, as well as the President and other officers from the DSU, discuss campaigns and student concerns.
You should ask me about:
- What the DSU has to offer – the advice centre, the night bus, and entertainment and weekends (Planet of Sound and Revolver)
- How to get involved in the DSU, such as chairing council debates (and many other positions)
- Becoming a Junior Rep – join me every 2 weeks to debate student politics, gain insight into how the university works and great social nights!
- Campaigns – Is there an issue that you would like more information on? Are there any causes which you would like to see the DSU pursuing? Do you want to protest!?
- Anything to do with Van Mildert (I am also your representative on the Exec!)
- How the Combined Social Sciences degree works
- Van Mildert Debating Society
- Current political issues
About me
I actually haven’t grown up in the UK, coming from ‘Sunny Singapore’ (actually it rains quite a lot) so will always be around college, as I can’t exactly pop back home for the weekend. I study history and politics, and do fit the mould, as I can usually be provoked into debate on any issue, anytime, anywhere. I’ve been involved with a number of aspects of colleges since my first day, so if you have a question about anything, do feel free to ask me and I’ll do my best. You can usually find me in Van Mildert Bar, sipping on a San Miguel. Is nice. I like. Patrick is a member of the following committees in Mildert: Constitution - Member

What do I do:
As JCR Secretary, it's my job to keep you informed of what's what in the world of Van Mildert JCR. This includes taking minutes of meetings, maintaining sections of the website such as the Who's Who, creating mailing lists, liasing with Heads of Committees, making sure noticeboards are up to date and sending out emails. I also deal with room bookings and Health and Safety.
I currently have no committees to help me with this but I am looking to establish Communications Committee to strengthen communications and access to JCR information.
If you are organising an event in college, I should be your first port of call. I deal with your room bookings, Health and Safety and I can also help you publicise your event through emails, facebook and noticeboards.
About Me:
I'm Ed and I'm a second year chemist, originally from the deathtrap that is Nottingham. When I'm not doing exec things, I can often be found in college doing PA, helping with live music events through Jam Night, or just in the bar! Outside of college I'm a Purple Radio DJ, I play the bass, I go to loads of gigs and can very occasionally be seen working for my degree (but not too often).
Ask me about:
- Meeting minutes
- JCR information
- The website
- Emails.
- Communications
- Whether your event is healthy and safe
- Why Glastonbury is the only music festival anyone should go to

What Do I Do?
As senior Freshers’ Rep there are Four key things I do. The first and most obvious is, as the name would suggest is Freshers’ Week. I will be the one picking a team of enthusiastic volunteers to partake in the busiest week of most people’s university lives and trying to make it be fun and run smoothly. But there is more to it than that! I am also the one who runs the open days and as with the Freshers’ week team I am the one who picks the people who will come to help run them. Let us not forget handling of interviewees and coordinating between the college and the team of interviewee reps. I am also a friendly face on the Exec who is there to represent freshers’ views and someone who you can ask literally anything relating to Durham and I will know the answer or know someone who does know the answer.
Talk to me about:
- Settling in
- How to get involved in college
- Being an open day/freshers’/interviewee rep
- Everything about durham.
About Me:
I’m from the gun crime capital of the UK, Nottingham. It is a lovely place really you just need to have a bullet proof vest. I do computer science up here at Durham and although there is probably a stigma about us all never leaving our rooms and playing far too much world of warcraft (something I have never done unlike Sam Roseveare) really, none of us are like that at Mildert. I picked Durham University as kind of a far flung UCAS filling space but surprisingly they let me in. Now I am here I love the place and I can’t imagine being anywhere else. I have got involved in college a fair bit to ask me anything you want and I will try to fill you in. I particularly enjoy visiting the bar at college.
