York Small Boats Head and Senate Cup

After a back injury caused the college’s racing crew at Tees Small Boats Head to pull out, Tyne United Small Boats Head became the first race for the club this year.

On Saturday 5th November a men’s Novice IV (Page, Gascoigne, Thompson, Trickle with Anna Fawcett) and a women’s IM3 IV (Barton, Clark, Bowden, Shepherd with cox Will Stagg) raced the 5km racecourse on the Tyne.

The women’s IV gave a strong race, passing the Castle crew in front as they crossed the finish line, taking away both tankards for fastest women’s IM3 crew and pennant points for fastest college women’s IV. The scratch men’s IV finished third overall in their category, and were the second fastest novice college crew.

On Sunday the 20th November, VMBC travelled to the city of York for the yearly Small Boats Head, a 3km head race, and the 3rd race of the pennant series.

In a very foggy division 1, a women’s IM3 IV (Bolt, Macdonald, Stevenson, Bangert with cox Lydia Smith) and a men’s IM3 IV raced (Crosland-Mills, Stagg, Harrap, Durnan with cox Vicky Goodwin).

The women’s crew put in a solid start, holding off a Sheffield University crew for most of the course, while the men’s IV produced a strong start to the season, overtaking DARC immediately and pulling past Sheffield University in the last section of the race.

Division 3 saw another women’s IM3 IV (Barton, Shepherd, Clark, Bowden coxed by Clem Keily-Baxter) and a Novice 1x (Stagg) competing. The IV suffered technical difficulties with the rudder cable snapping and bow’s gate bursting open, however still managed to set a decent time from the course.

The entire head had 389 finishing crews, with the fastest time set by a Leeds Uni IM2 coxless quad at 10:11.3, and the slowest time as 18:32.0 by a women’s novice coxed quad.

The men’s IV rated overall at 59th, and as the 4th fastest IM3 IV, and 5th/15 men’s college IV’s with a time of 11:53.8 for the entire course. The women’s IV’s ranked 6th and 10th out of 13 college women’s IV’s, with times of 14:09.1 and 14:38.8 at positions 279 and 311. The novice scull finished 243rd, with a time of 13:43.8, as the fastest of 2 college sculls and 7th/12 in the category.

VMBC has made a solid start to the season in the Pennants series and with more races in the next few weeks, all crews will be fighting for further successes.
