Bursaries & Scholarships
Postgraduate Bursaries
The college offers competitive bursaries to MCR members registered for higher Durham degrees (doctorates and masters with a research focus). There are currently six of these per year worth up to £2,000 each. The college will provide further details and invite applications in October after the start of the academic year.
Van Mildert College Trust Research Scholarship
The Van Mildert College Trust is funding a full Postgraduate Scholarship which is held for 3 years and covers free residence plus a cost of living allowance. Our Van Mildert College Trust Scholarship is currently open to competition and is not restricted to existing MCR members.
Postgraduate Conference Attendance Fund
Van Mildert College Trust has developed this scheme to enable Van Mildert Students, typically postgraduates, to attend a conference which will enhance their academic career.
Awards of up to £250 are available which may be used to cover conference registration costs, travel, accommodation or subsistence. Evidence of expenditure will be required from the recipients of this award.
Calls for applications will take place in both the Michaelmas and Easter terms, however, students may apply for the award at any point during the academic year. We cannot guarantee that all applications will be successful so it is important that you provide as much information as possible to assist the panel in its decisions.
Internship Support Bursary Scheme
Internships are an increasingly important part of graduates' early careers, but can be costly for students - particularly those who are required to work away from home. In 2010, the Trust created an Internship Support Bursary scheme for Van Mildert students who have been awarded an internship in their penultimate year of study but who are not able to take it up owing to a lack of funds.
The bursary provides students with support to meet travel and accommodation costs. Three awards of £250 each are currently available but it is hoped that this wil be increased in the future. This builds on the hugely important initiative developed by Van Mildert Association to hold a Careers Dialogue in the Michaelmas term of each academic year. Information about this scheme will be circulated during Michaelmas term.
