Van Mildert Association

About the VMA

The VMA is at the heart of Van Mildert College life. Its membership stands at almost 4000 alumni. It makes a vital contribution to the welfare of current undergraduates through the provisions of its Student Hardship Fund, and to the development of College through its generous support of a range of key initiatives, such as the restoration of the lake and the establishment of up-to-the-minute music, drama and gym facilities. This year, it has instigated a careers dialogue initiative to provide current Van Mildert students with the chance to discuss careers-related matters with VMA members. Support and nurturing of the Van Mildert student body are central to what the VMA is about.

The VMA has come a long way since it became self-administring just a few years ago. The Association boasts a highly-motivated and forward-looking committee, which manages the Association's assets and business. The committee is elected at the AGM - candidature is open to all VMA members. The success of the VMA lies with its broader membership: I am delighted to say that an increasing number of members are becoming involved in its activities. This is highly encouraging, as I am only too aware of the competing demands and pace of modern life.

Membership of the VMA is, of course, a superb means of keeping in touch with friends and acquaintances from College days; the annual Reunion Weekend offers an excellent opportunity to refresh these contacts within a College setting - and with a cracking dinner on the Saturday to boot! Our most annual dinner is regularly attended by more than a 100 members and guests: this is an eloquent expression of the depth of feeling VMA members have for Van Mildert and what it stands for.

In sum, the VMA plays a vital role in the life of College today and in shaping its future, whilst cherishing and maintaining the best of its past.
