Senior Common Room
The Ustinov College SCR is a body made up of past and present senior members of the University, College Officers, staff, College Tutors, and other living locally with an interest in the College, including local alumni. Its purpose is to support the life of the College and to enhance its integration into the wider University and local community. For its members it will provide dedicated social, cultural and intellectual activities together with a range of opportunities to engage with Ustinov's diverse and international postgraduate membership. Because Ustinov is a postgraduate College, and a self-catered one, it offers a different kind of SCR experience (which some may choose to combine with membership of another College SCR where, for example, formal dining opportunities are more regular).
Ustinov, formerly the Graduate Society, is specifically a focus for postgraduate student life in Durham throughout the year, with a wide range of seminars, café discussion events, and social and cultural events which members of the SCR are most welcome to attend as they wish, as well as a weekly pub quiz and a number of formal and informal dinners each year which will be included in the SCR programme. The GCR (Graduate Common Room) is very keen to foster interaction with the SCR, and is likely to add to this programme e.g. through specific sporting challenges and informal networking. SCR members are welcome to use the café in Fisher House at any time (wi-fi enabled, open from 9.30 to 6.00 throughout the week). The SCR is run by its own Committee, and there is a small annual membership subscription (£20 individual/£30 couple).
