A Week in the Life... Student Diaries

Name: Colinette Wang
College: John Snow
Course: Business Management with Foundation

Colinette is a 2nd year student, based at Queen's Campus Stockton. She is a member of the Team Durham University Basketball team.

Monday

This is the day I have to be most organised. I have lessons from 10am to 5pm, with an hour lunch break, then I race to catch the free X1 bus up to Durham for basketball practice; I play for my college team and the University team too. Afterwards, I head home and work on assignments for an hour before heading to bed.

Tuesday

I spend my morning in town food shopping and then work on my assignments in the Library, making use of the wonderful range of books and study resources that the Queen’s Campus Library has to offer. Alternating each week, I either stay at Queen’s for our weekly college meal with my friends at the Waterside Restaurant (one of the cafes on campus), or head back to Durham on the X1 bus for Team Durham basketball practice.

Wednesday

I have two hours of lessons in the morning, followed by a rowing session on the river in the afternoon. TeamDurhamGirls Basketball Teamusually has games onWednesday nights, so I go up to Durham and play. As a well-deserved reward, I then relax in the ‘Igloo’ (the John Snow college common room), and end the day by watching a movie with my college mates.

Thursday

After another full day of lectures and seminars, I unwind by dining with my friends at our second weekly college dinner. This is a good opportunity to catch up with friends who have different timetables during the week. On Thursday nights my friends and I can often be found partying in Onyx, the best nightclub (in my opinion) in Stockton! Some nights are themed, so we dress up in the wildest costumes!

Friday

My Friday mornings are lecture-free, so whenever I don’t sleep in, I continue reading or finish any outstanding assignments and portfolios. I then have afternoon classes before I finish my ‘working week’ off with a good hour of rowing practice on the ergos (indoor rowing) and basketball practice with my college team mates.

Saturday

This is my quiet day; my ‘me-time’. I sleep late and wake up to a big bag of laundry and do some housework! I usually ride my bike to town – the University works closely with a bicycle company so we students benefit with a healthy, cheap and environmentally-friendly way of getting around! It only takes five minutes to cycle to Stockton from John Snow College. As for the rest of the day, my friends and I do anything that interests us.

Sunday

Sundays aren’t a quiet day for me. I play college badminton in the morning at the multi-purpose sports centre on campus, and then it’s off to Durham for University basketball practice later in the day. Once I arrive back home it’s studying, cooking and eating until I finally run out of energy and fall asleep, ready for the week to repeat itself!

Course: History

Hugh is a member of the University Cycling Club and also writes for the Team Durham website.

Monday

Today I have a lecture and a seminar, with studying in the Cathedral Library in between, then an afternoon of studying at home. I head out for a pub quiz with my housemates after supper.

Tuesday

I spend the morning in the Bill Bryson Library to do essay reading. All of the books I need are there, so I get some useful work done. After my afternoon lectures I go shopping for a fancy dress outfit for the Durham University Cycling Club social; a night of fun in Studio Nightclub. The theme is something beginning with "C" - I go as a cow!

Wednesday

I work on my presentations and have a meeting with a lecturer. Afterwards I head to Maiden Castle sports centre to watch the University Basketball Team compete in Super Wednesday. I interview one of the players and spend the evening writing up the article for the Team Durham website. Like a dutiful son, I also called the parents!

Thursday

After a day of essay writing and lectures, I go for a meal with my college "wife" and "children"; a brilliant system that involves being assigned two first year students as "children", to befriend and give advice to on their course and university life.

Friday

I go for an early morning cycle out to the North Pennines with a friend and get back in time for more lectures and a seminar. That afternoon I manage a quick game of squash. After supper I go to a local restaurant/bar with my friends, where live music is played by aspiring student musicians

Saturday

I start the day with a gruelling 70km cycle ride around the beautiful hills of County Durham, then home to watch the football on TV with friends. I spend the evening writing an application for a volunteer role at a local school, which is part of a University scheme.

Sunday

I go for a run with some friends followed by a well-earned brunch, I then spend the rest of the day working on essays. Sunday is usually a quiet night in, reading magazines and having a meal cooked by a housemate.
