Theatre

‘All the world’s a stage’ and nowhere is this more evident than at Durham University.

Even though we do not offer performing arts courses, there are vibrant and successful theatrical communities in Durham City and Quenn's Campus, offering opportunitites for your talents to flourish. With around 600 members,Durham Student Theatre (DST) is the largest student theatre organisation in the country. Discover a new talent by taking the opportunity to try something for the first time, be it acting, singing, dancing or directing.

All student theatre at Durham is student-led and manged with the support of Experience Durham and Durham Students' Union.

Break a leg!

With over 20 student theatre companies producing around 60 shows every year, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a dramatic student experience. Pursue your passion for theatre or try performing for the first time through college theatre; become a member of Durham Student Theatre (DST) or within your college. DST encourages involvement in all aspects of theatre including writing, directing, scenery design, even developing technical expertise in lighting and sound. They even arranged for Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe to hold an acting master class!

The University has its very own 220-seat theatre, right in the heart of Durham City and students based at Queen’s Campus can take advantage of our partnership with ARC Stockton, rehearsing and performing in this professional theatre and arts complex.

The Assembly Rooms, Durham and ARC, Stockton

The Assembly Rooms Theatre, where many of our Durham Student Theatres productions are hosted, is an historic 223-seat proscenium arch theatre in the heart of Durham City. It is also home to the Durham Student Theatre exec office, a box office, workshop, green room, two changing rooms, props and costume store and a scene dock. The theatre is located on North Bailey, opposite Hatfield College. You can find contact details and a location map on this page.

DST manages the Assembly Rooms in conjunction with the University, and we have just completed a £100,000 refurbishment programme generously funded by the Gillian Dickinson Trust. This has allowed us to restore the main auditorium to its former design, and install a modern and functional box office foyer area.

Our partner, premier performance venue in Stockton, ARC, is host to our Queen's-based student theatre and musical productions. There are two theatre societies based at Queen's - Infinity Musical Theatre (IMT) and Awesome College Theatre (ACT), and both provide the opportunity for people of any ability to take part in performances. The societies encourage both performers and non-performers to join, including those who would prefer to get involved with the technical side of things. ARC is a professional theatre and arts complex, also hosting a wide variety of cultural entertainment from the latest movies to dance classes, music, comedy performances and activities for children.
