Charity and Outreach

While you're at University you might want to actively engage with the community outside your college, giving something back through charity and volunteer work. Many colleges run their own community outreach projects, including prison visiting, work with local primary and secondary schools, and giving time to the local hospice. You can also get involved with these kind of initiatives on a University-level through Student Community Action (SCA).
Colleges also do loads of fundraising for local, national and international charities through the Durham University Charities Kommittee (DUCK). Each college has a DUCK representative to coordinate the crazy activities you can get involved with to help raise money.

One of my most rewarding experiences so far at university has been visiting an elderly residential home on a Wednesday afternoon. We played scrabble, baked cakes and played bowling on the Nintendo Wii. Having the opportunity to go into the community and meet people has really added to my time at University.
