Leadership Opportunities

A place to get involved...

Student involvement in the running of each college is a huge part of what makes your experience here so unique. You can get involved in heading up a college society, captaining a sports team, or even leading your college's student body.

Common rooms

Every student and college staff member belongs to a group called a 'common room'. Undergraduates belong to the Junior Common Room (JCR), postgraduates belong to the Middle Common Room (MCR) and staff belong to the Senior Common Room (SCR). In many colleges, as well as creating a community of members, each group has its own social space.

The 'exec'

Your college JCR are each headed up by an executive committee of students (the 'exec'). The exec, who are elected annually by their fellow students, have a variety of managerial responsibilities including:

  • representing the views of undergraduates
  • providing an additional layer of welfare support
  • encouraging social interaction amongst students through college events

Your chance to lead

As an undergraduate, you can put yourself forward for election to your college's JCR exec. Not only does this look fantastic on your CV, but you also have the opportunity to develop an impressive skill set.

Depending on your position in the exec you might represent student views, negotiate on behalf of the student body, plan and implement student-led college events, head up student welfare initiatives in assocation with the Students' Union, oversee college societies and even have some input into the future development of your college. You have the chance to really make things happen!

Alternatively, you might want to get involved in helping run one of the college societies, or even setting one up from scratch with the support of your JCR exec.

JCRs each have their own websites which can be accessed through the individual college web pages.

Senior Common Room

The Senior Common Room in each college is made up of a mixture of University staff, alumni, and members of the local community interested in taking part in the life of the college.

The SCR  plays a key role in encouraging  the junior members of the college (undergraduates and postgraduates) to engage with staff and the local community, and provides opportunities for members of the SCR to socialise together.
