Social Events

Student-organised social events are a big part of college life. Even when you live out in town during second year, your college is still very much your hub of social activity. All sorts of musical, theatrical and entertainment evenings take place throughout the year, as well as regular formal dinners, annual balls and college celebration days.

Big formal dinners with a black-tie dress code or fancy-dress theme (like 'superheroes' or 'Bond') are a regular occurrence at every college, usually happening two or three times a term. These evenings of wining and dining often see your dining hall decked out in style, with three courses served at your table, and maybe even a bit of a dance afterwards!

Annual summer and winter college celebrations are a huge highlight.  Though every college does something a bit different, the celebrations are often themed, and from dusk till dawn you'll enjoy a fantastic experience. Previous themes have included 'New York, New York', 'Love and Peace', 'Never, Never Land' and 'the Circus' - complete with big top, candy floss and helter-skelters!

And if you prefer a more relaxed pace of life, you can always chill out with your friends in one of the college social spaces: Play pool in the games room, sunbathe in the college grounds, watch your favourite TV show or read the newspaper in the lounge, or just catch up with friends over a drink in the bar.

If you still have time for more, there are University-wide events throughout the year hosted by the University, and by the Durham Students' Union (DSU). Check out the What's On Guide and the DSU events listings.
