FAQs
Can I bring electrical equipment from overseas?
The electricity supply in the UK has a much higher voltage than in some countries outside the UK. It is therefore very important that electrical appliances are used safely - an electric shock can be fatal. For these reasons, you must not use any electrical appliance in the College if it requires an adaptor for use in the UK.
Appliances such as hairdryers, rice cookers etc. do not normally have a seperate electric cable and these are therefore not permitted in the residence unless they have a British moulded 3-pin plug. Please do not bring these types of electrical equipment with you - they can be heavy and they take up a lot of luggage space. Buy them when you arrive and you will be able to use them in Britain throughout your time here.
Laptops and mobile phones: We appreciate that you have some important electrical equipment you want to bring with you, such as your computer lap top and your mobile phone. These items normally have a separate cable for connecting to the electrical supply. In order that you can use these important items whilst you are at University, your College will make arrangements for an electrician to check your equipment and if possible, give you a cable, free of charge, which will allow you to use this equipment safely. Please make sure you inform the College if you have brought any equipment which requires an adaptor for use in the UK.
