Trevelyan College Art Exhibition: Barry Woodward "Fluid Frontiers"
Monday 28 October 2013 - Friday 6 December 2013 inclusive
Barry Woodward has spent his working life in the Navy, the Scottish Home Department working on Freshwater Fisheries, the Colonial Office working on food storage in developing countries, helping to create what is now the British Library Document Supply Division, the University of Strathclyde and finally as Keeper of the Science Books in Durham University Library. Now retired he is able to devote more time to his preferred activity of painting and drawing.
Painting and drawing have always been important and through the years, classes at Ruskin College, Bournville; York Art Gallery; Glasgow School of Art; the Extramural Department in Durham and the Artists' Co-operative at Bearpark, Durham have played their part. He was Chairman of the Durham Art Group for many years.
His first one man show was at the (then) Staff Club, Dunelm House in 1972. Subsequent exhibition venues include Durham Art Gallery; Trevelyan College; Oriental Museum; Cheveley Park Community Centre; Cathedral Undercroft; all in Durham. Elsewhere the Botanic Centre, Middlesbrough and Brownside Coachhouse, Pennines.
Group Shows in Durham include the University 150th Celebrations; Van Mildert College; Botanic Gardens. Elsewhere, Salen, Mull; Darlington Arts Centre; Newcastle Central Library; Laing Gallery Newcastle; Newcastle Art Centre and the Hirsel Craft Centre in Coldstream.
His pictures are in private and public collections in UK and overseas; most interestingly in Dinan in the gallery of Les Amis de Grande Vigne who gave him an Artist Residency in that town.
His subject matter includes people and places as well as people in places. His media include oils, acrylics, collage, and he experiments with non traditional methods but always returns to watercolour where he feels there is enough to satisfy several lifetimes work.
The playwright Sheila Stephen has said "In the end, you always end up writing what you can, not what you want. The idea in your head is always better." He has found this to be equally true of the visual arts.
