Activities and Events

The MCR regularly organises social and academic events for our members.  These vary in their scale and substance, but the idea behind all of them is to enhance college life for postgrads, giving everyone the opportunity to meet new people, share new ideas and generally to have some fun!

Here are some more detailed descriptions of they kind of events that you can expect to attend as a member of Trevs MCR

  • Formals – we not only run MCR formals for postgrads only, but also attend joint formals with the JCR (undergrads) and SCR (senior college members). Formals are an opportunity to dress up smart and share a three course meal in college, and are often some of the best nights in college. Joint formals happen once a fortnight, and MCR formals (which are of slightly higher quality) happen around twice a term. We encourage all our members to come to at least a few formals each year, as they really are one of the highlights of the Trevs social scene!
  • Cocktail Nights – the MCR organise regular cocktail evenings throughout the year, which provide an opportunity for everyone to let of steam after a hard day’s work in a sophisticated and relaxed setting. Trevs Bar provides a bespoke cocktail services, and prices are kept very reasonable. These events happen at least twice a term, and are free to attend (apart from drinks of course!) and are a really nice way of passing an evening, with good company and good conversation guaranteed!
  • Volunteering trips – the main volunteering project that the MCR engages in are regular visits throughout the year to Wallington Hall, a National Trust property about an hour away from Durham and the ancient seat of the Trevelyan family after whom the college takes its name. The strong links between Trevs and Wallington have been pioneered by the MCR and have resulted in a numer of reciprocal and shared activities and programmes, one of which is our now well established residential volunteering programme. We travel to Wallington for around five weekends each year to help the National Trust staff in developing the property and its grounds – we usually pursue a specific project (this year we are working on childhood life at Wallington), which involves aspects of archive research, mapping, and practical building, in order to add to and improve the service that Wallington is able to offer to the thousands of visitors who explore it each year. These trips are great fun, and highlight on the MCR calendar!
  • Research events – the MCR also organise more academically focussed research formals and buffets, as well as academic poster competitions, in order to give MCR members the chance to present their research to their peers in a relaxed and amiable setting. These events are always well attended, showing the interest and support that we have for each other’s academic work, and importantly give MCR members the chance to mix and socialise with members of the SCR, with whom we run these events jointly. Whether people want to practice for an upcoming conference, share a piece of research that they are passionate about, or simply present interesting ideas that they might like to gon and research  our research events are always stimulating and fun evenings and add another dimension to life in Trevs.
