Academic Parents & Godparents

Every student is allocated ‘academic parents’ when they arrive in Durham. These are 2nd or 3rd year students who take the same subject, and so can provide academic support to their ‘children.’ It is also a good chance to get know some other Trevs students in a different year group.

We also have an ‘academic godparents’ system where undergraduate students can ask to have a postgraduate ‘godparent’ who can help them with their studies. Get in contact with the welfare officers if you would like to be assigned an academic ‘godparent.’

Senior Tutor – Ian Latham

The Senior Tutor, Ian Latham, can help students who are having academic difficulties. Email him or drop by his office during the weekdays and he will help you.

Severe Adverse Circumstances

If, for some reason, your coursework or exams are affected by illness or personal problems, then you should fill in a ‘Severe Adverse Circumstances’ form. Your department will then take these problems into account and may extend deadlines/boost your results etc. Talk to Ian Latham if you would like to apply for SAC, and he can help you to fill in the form. Alternatively DUSSD, the counselling service or your department can help you with this.

Note that you need to fill in the SAC form as soon as possible. If you do not fill in the form within 5 days of experiencing the severe adverse circumstance, then you will need to provide a reasonable explanation for the delay.
