The aim of this workshop is to introduce new supervisors to the external, institutional and professional contexts of research supervision. The objectives are to consider:

  • the changing external context of research supervision and of the implications for supervisory practice;
  • the institutional context of research supervision at Durham, including requirements for an award, the University’s Code of Practice, the respective roles and responsibilities of research students and supervisors, and the postgraduate training programme;
  • the professional context in terms of establishing and maintain a professional relationship with research students.

The workshop will include a mixture of presentations, group discussion, and exercises including the completion of a supervisory styles inventory.

The facilitators will be Dr Lowry McComb, Director of Researcher Development and Dr Stan Taylor, Director of the Centre for Academic and Researcher Development.
