The module aims to support academic and research staff to develop the knowledge and skills to enable them to initiate research projects, including planning and preparing for an application for external funding.

The intended learning outcomes are that participants should:

• be able to demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the process of developing a research project within their own subject-specific context;
• be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge ofDurham’s procedures and mechanisms for supporting funded research;
• be able to demonstrate knowledge and critical awareness of the demands of  relevant national and international funding bodies.
• be able to design and plan a research project which will include planning and preparing an application for external funds.

This course comprises Module 5 of the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice but is also available a standalone assessed module rated at 20 credits at Masters Level. Participants who gain credit on this module can use this credit towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice at a later date. Note that we intend to introduce a PG CAP (Research) pathway in the future.
