It is an honour to be asked to externally examine at another institution, but it is a responsibility as well. The aim of this workshop is to support colleagues new to external examining to prepare for their roles.

The workshop will:

  • briefly consider the national context of external examining;
  • review the typical responsibilities and expectations of external examiners;
  • identify the key issues that you are likely to face as external examiners.

In terms of process, this will consist of a combination of presentations, case studies and group discussions.

The facilitators are all experienced in the external examiner system and include Dr Richard Harrison, Head of the Academic Support Office, Professor Jonathan Long, Deputy Head (Postgraduate) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and Dr Andrew Millard (Archaeology).
