Abstract

Purity is a rarely used, even embarrassing concept in contemporary theology, with connotations of archly conservative concerns. Yet in scripture and early theology it was a central concept, related to themes such as knowledge of God, access to God, ethics, and the priesthood. This volume collects essays on purity in scripture, early Jewish thought and traces its history in various strands of theology. The aim is to arrive at a clearer idea of the concept, to trace its history in theology, and to enquire whether it may be of use for the future.
