Biography
Although I hail from Seattle, my wife Helen and I live in Gilesgate, Durham. I am an adjunct lecturer in Biblical Studies at Cranmer Hall, St. John’s College (Durham University), and am a Tutor in Old and New Testament at Lindisfarne Regional Training Partnership. In addition to these, I teach Missions Studies for our local church, and am a Tutor and Mentor at Hatfield College (Durham University). Prior to coming to Durham, I lived and taught at a seminary in Cameroon, West Africa.
I have recently completed a PhD (under review with T.&T. Clark, LHBOTS) that undertakes a comparison of three Old Testament scholars who seek to interpret Isaiah 52.13- 53.12 within a theological frame of reference: Bernhard Duhm, Brevard Childs, and Alec Motyer. The dissertation aims to explore the formation and application of theological hermeneutics. As theological reading of the Old Testament is largely constituted by a sympathetic return to a collection of practices and sensitivities largely identified with a pre-modern frame of reference, my thesis addresses in what ways this 'return' relates to what is often called (for better or worse) 'historical criticism'.
I have also reviewed works for Vetus Testamentum, the European Journal of Theology, Politics and Religion, Theology and Sexuality, and Theological Book Review.
