Chaplaincy
Welcome from the Chaplain
Hello - and welcome!
As St Mary's College Chaplain, I would like to invite you to visit our lovely, peaceful chapel, whether to attend a service or to come in to enjoy the quiet space. It's a great place to escape from the noise and busyness of College life, whether you use it to pray, meditate, or simply chill out.
Our Director of Music has said a bit about the worship services in chapel, so please see his welcome letter too. In addition to the services, on alternate Wednesdays there are discussion evenings with guest speakers to explore a variety of issues of wider interest. See the section on discussion evenings for the schedule this term.
However, apart from worship services and discussion evenings, I am also here to listen confidentially if you have any concerns you would like to speak about with me. So please do be in touch.
Rev'd Jenny Moberly, Chaplain
Hello everyone! My name is Matthew Morgan. I am the Director of Music here at St Mary's College Chapel. Our mission at the Chapel is to be as inclusive in worship as possible. The types of music we sing vary greatly and are based mostly around the Anglican liturgy. Sung services are bi-weekly on Wednesday evenings (19:30) in the Chapel with each alternate Wednesday having a discussion evening. We often vary the types of worship offered. We normally sing an alternating pattern of Choral Evensong (Sung Evening Prayer) and Choral Eucharist (Eucharist sung to a setting by a particular composer and a Communion Anthem). Previous special services have included Taize worship and Christian Union services. The choir is the premier NON AUDITIONING chapel choir within Durham and we believe that good music making and worship should be open to all people in the community of Durham.
The choir does not only cater for members of the College in chapel. This year more than ever we are looking to take our music outside of St Mary's College. We are looking for members from any Durham College, particularly members of Hill Colleges at all levels whether SCR, MCR or JCR. The choir is also singing within Durham Cathedral as well as constructing an outreach programme for the local community. I am looking for different groups to use the chapel this year and am interested in setting up a series of concerts and masterclasses. If you would like to perform a group or solo recital please get in contact with me.
If you would like to know information about services, programmes for music, commitments, scholarships or rehearsal schedules please see resources below. If I or Rev'd Jenny Moberly can be of any more assistance do not hesitate to get in contact with us. I do look forward to welcoming you into the Chapel soon.
