St Mary's College

About St Mary's

The approach to St Marys is one of the most beautiful walks in Durham University. A long tree lined drive with imposing neo-classical College buildings to the right contrasts with a panoramic view across the city towards the Cathedral to the left. It stands as a testimony to the courage and faithfulness of the men and women who pioneered university education for women in Durham.

St Marys College opened its doors to men in October 2005 and since then has become one of the best Colleges in Durham for men and women who have a heart for justice and equality between human beings of all races and all socio-economic backgrounds. It is proud of the diversity of its staff and students and strives to inspire all who enter its doors with a belief in their own potential, not only in the world of academia, but in many walks of life.

In the past, students who have left the College have since made their mark on areas requiring a special dedication to ethical principles, and are to be found pioneering new initiatives in education, the media, politics, the health services and relief organisations, as they believe above all in the equal rights of the individual. Open at last to male students, St Mary's will remain a College dedicated to the ideal of equal opportunity for all. Its staff and Mentors are committed to enabling each student to reach their full potential. Whoever or whatever you are, you will never feel out of place at St Mary's.
