St John’s College Chapel: St Mary-the-Less

Many of our services are drawn from the Church of England’s Common Worship range of resources, and our weekly pattern of worship consciously embraces a variety of ‘church-styles’. The main service of the week is the College Communion on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm in the Leech Hall. Early morning celebrations of Holy Communion at 7.30am on Mondays and Fridays are simple services of word and table, as is the service on Thursday lunchtime.

Prayer in the Morning, every weekday at 8.30am, varies in style from day to day and week to week, but always includes  Bible reading and prayer, and sometimes song.  The style and mood of Prayer in the Evening changes through the week: on Mondays, the service is often led by Discipleship Groups and is an informal gathering at which children are especially welcome; on Wednesdays, the service is a traditional-style Choral Evensong, led by the College Choir and a Cranmer ordinand; on Fridays, the service is a candlelit service of Bible reading and prayer.

On Thursdays, our mid-day Communion and evening Service of the Word are Methodist in style.

On Saturday evening and Sunday morning, our College Chapel is used by local Orthodox Christians. The contact person is Fr. Andrew Louth, Orthodox chaplain to the University.

From time to time, our Chapel is used for Roman Catholic worship. The contact person is Fr. Anthony Currer, Roman Catholic chaplain to the university

A number of Christian groups meet in college at various venues through the week: the main meetings are the Christian Union which gathers at 9.00pm on Mondays in the Leech Hall, and offers many opportunities for Bible study through the week. The contact person for the CU is Katherine Higgins
