The MA in Theology and Ministry is validated by the University of Durham and jointly delivered by Cranmer Hall, the Wesley Study Centre and Ushaw College. The course began in 2001 and we have had between 80 and 100 students enrolled at any one time. The MA programme is in a process of continuous expansion and development.
The course is designed to meet the needs of:
- Ministers, Clergy, Readers, Local Preachers, other authorised lay ministers from any Christian Church
- Anglican, and Roman Catholic ordinands and Methodist student ministers
- Methodist Foundation training students
- Teachers, youth workers, pastoral workers and others involved in Christian ministry.
The programme aims to develop graduates equipped to play a leading role in the development of Christian mission and ministry in the United Kingdom and throughout the world as practitioners, educators and enablers of the whole people of God.
The MA consists of the following elements:
- Core Module: Theological and Practical Reflection on Mission and Ministry
- Three taught modules chosen from this list
- A 12 - 15,000-word dissertation
The MA is delivered through a variety of modes of teaching which make it accessible to people locally, nationally and internationally:
Summer school: 13th - 17th July 2009.
- During term time MA teaching is concentrated on Thursdays ('teaching Thursdays')
- Most modules are offered through short periods of residential study ('block residential')
- One module (M429) is offered entirely on-line.
- New for 2009:
M426 Theological Approaches to Spiritual Direction and M439 Spirituality and Creativity for Evangelism and Worship
The MA can be taken in one year full-time or part-time over two or three years. For a 3 year student this means that the MA can be taken either by travelling to Durham for up to 20 'teaching Thursdays' or by approximately 10 days residence per year.
Modules can be taken from those offered by Cranmer Hall and the Wesley Study Centre or from those offered by Ushaw College. One module can be taken from the MA in Theological Research offered by the University of Durham Department of Theology and Religion or from the School of Applied Social Sciences.
