Humane Christianity

Given the failings of the institutional church, it is hardly surprising that some view Christianity with cynicism. This book seeks to regain a more positive and humane Christianity. The institutional church has much to be ashamed of in its history whether it be corruption, deceit, suppression of ideas, direct persecution, racism, patriarchy, abuse or anti-Semitism. The church can also be accused of a less-than-healthy attitude towards our physical nature, our sexuality and enjoyment of material pleasures. Given the discrepancy between what the church seems to stand for and how the gospels portray the life of Jesus, it is hardly surprising that many people regard Christianity with a certain amount of cynicism. Here, Alan Bartlett seeks to regain a sense of humane Christianity, which is marked by a fundamental shift from a negative to a positive conception of this world and from a negative to a positive motivation for the Christian life.

Living for God

is a series of studies for those who want to take discipleship seriously, and would like to look further into the basics of Christian life and faith. Designed as a cross between a study guide and a theological resource, Richard and Melody Briggs' new book explores twenty-four aspects of Christian discipleship under the broad headings of God, scripture, and Christian life. Written in an easily accessible style, with resources recommended for further reading, it is a great tool for church study groups and individual study.

When the Church Says No

Facing not being selected for church office - whether that is for ordained ministry, recognised office or informal leadershi responsibility - is like journeying through a strange country, and even the Bible does not easily unfold like a map to guide us. Drawing on many years' experience in working with people on this journey, Helen Thorp engages with the experience and with the hard but profound biblical material on rejection. She offers wise advice and pastoral tools for those accompanying others on the road.

Holy Places Holy People

The North-East of England is rich in history, beautiful scenery and welcoming people. Celebrated for its Christian heritage, its saints are as diverse as the varied scenery in which we discover their history.

This book is for pilgrims - both physical and metaphorical - who want the wisdom of the past to shape their present. In each chapter we discover the stories of the saints, both well known and unfamiliar, as we journey to the places they made famous. Some of the sites and saints included in the book are:

The Revd Dr David Wilkinson

The Message of Creation

This is a journey through the Bible, which is an exploratory walk rather than a motorway dash. The large number and diversity of biblical passages dealing with the theme of creation underlines its central importance to the biblical message. As a theologian (whose focus is the Bible) and as an eminent astrophysicist (whose subject is the visible universe) David Wilkinson is well placed to try to capture some of the richness of the biblical portrayal of creation. The key to this portrait, believes David Wilkinson, is to see Father, Son, and Spirit in the beginning, the sustaining, and the new beginning of creation, giving life and love in a generosity beyond our imaginings.
