Cranmer Hall

Cranmer Hall - Facilities

The Cellar Bar, run by undergraduates, stocks a full range of drinks and is a notable social centre in college. The college bar is arguably the most atmospheric within the university. Augmented by Linton Hallway it provides the perfect environment in which to relax after a taxing day's study.

Apart from the large Cranmer common room and JCR shop, there are two television rooms for lounging around in, a reading room and a launderette. A range of more ornate rooms can be booked by college societies for events and functions.

The college computing facilities boast the best ratio of computers to students in the university, and an ongoing programme of fitting ethernet connections in rooms. A separate postgraduate computing room is located within the college postgraduate centre.

The college fitness room is equipped with step and cycling machines, an ergo and apparatus designed to keep the unfit fit.

St John's leafy gardens stretch along the river bank and include a barbecue area. The college boat house is conveniently located directly below college by the river.

Musical and artistic talent can be discovered and expressed on the Leech Hall stage - and soon in an open-air theatre planned in college grounds. St John's has two theatre groups which perform regularly, often contributing to the University's Comedy revue. College bands have recently secured record contracts and the John's orchestra and choirs perform regularly to great acclaim. College owns a new Steinway/Boston piano, and at the Centre for Christian Communication has access to a sound studio and editing suite.

The college library is one of the best-resourced in the University, with over 30 000 volumes and a wide range of periodicals and journals.

The University creche and nursery are available for students with young children, and St John's also has its own professionally run child-care facilities.

St John's has its own medieval parish church, used as the College Chapel, where services are held daily (including a 7.20 am communion for rowers and those finishing essays in the early hours!) There is a weekly corporate Communion on a Tuesday evening held in the Leech Hall, and the college Christian Union also runs its own meetings and events.

College has a long tradition of community involvement and encourages student action in university and local voluntary groups and charities. St John's also provides its own training for students, in a range of vocational courses (IT skills, job interview techniques, language courses.) which are always useful for cv points.
