Cranmer Hall

Cranmer Aims

The Christian Church is called to respond to the love of God in the rhythm of worship and mission and to continue Christ's work of making disciples.

To fulfil this calling, the church needs all of its members, especially its lay and ordained ministers, to be equipped for Christian life and service.

Cranmer Hall aims to provide resources for formation and training for the church in mission:

  • Tailored patterns of formation and training for ordained ministry in the Church of England and the Methodist Church as a foundation for lifelong learning: ordained ministry which focuses and enables the service of the whole people of God in worship and in mission
  • Accessible lay and foundation training by full- and part-time study
  • High quality and effective in-service training for clergy in the region
Cranmer Students

Cranmer Hall is one part of St. John's College, Durham, an independent Christian foundation within Durham University. All Cranmer students are members of St John's College and have access to a wide range of college facilities. Students also have access to University sports facilities and access to library and IT resources is arranged as needed, depending on the level of study. Most undertake courses validated by or within the University.

All training takes place within an ecumenical context: Anglican ordinands train alongside Methodist student ministers in the Wesley Study Centre. Many courses are taught in partnership with Roman Catholic ordinands and lay students at Ushaw College. Students have some access to the facilities and resources of Durham University, including courses in one of the finest departments of theology in any university in the world.

Cranmer house

The College is set in a series of beautiful buildings on the peninsula in Durham, next to Durham Cathedral. Durham itself is in the north-east of England and provides an excellent context for training for ministry both in terms of its historic Christian resources and the contemporary need for mission.

About 60 Anglican ordinands are normally in training in Cranmer Hall, together with about 25 Methodist students and a small number of independent students. Women and men train alongside one another. Every age range and educational background is represented.

Cranmer Hall is an evangelical Anglican theological college which for many years has welcomed, affirmed and been enriched by ordinands from every tradition in the Church of England. Our evangelical identity is manifest through our commitment to:

  • teaching and engagement with Scripture
  • preaching
  • evangelism and nurture
  • prayer and personal holiness of life
  • exploring the insights of charismatic renewal.

We also take seriously our Anglican identity both in our ethos and teaching and we are committed to training ordinands for ministry within the whole breadth of Anglican tradition. This commitment includes the teaching of Anglicanism as a subject within the curriculum.

Our particular stated priorities within the whole task of formation are:

  • worship
  • mission
  • communication
  • Christian leadership
